The Silent Retreat

Join me as I recount my first silent retreat experience at Bethel Farm, New Hampshire. For five days, I disconnected from phones, computers, and books to embrace silence and face my inner thoughts and conditioned mind experience. Encouraged by my Ashtanga yoga teacher, Rich Ray, I bravely confronted my anxieties and fears, eventually finding some peace within. Set amidst the serene backdrop of Bethel Farm, I share the challenges and rewards of navigating this transformative journey, shedding light on the powerful benefits of silence and meditation.

Important show notes:

  • A resistant mind could mean you are ready
  • Its all in your head - how thoughts shape your life
  • The conditioned mind can be overcome to set us free
  • There's a childhood joy in the present moment, but its hard to find with all our distractions

A Student Mindset Is the Power Of Practice

This podcast episode delves into the importance of adopting a student mindset both on and off the yoga mat. I share how the culture of needing to be an expert in one's field can hinder personal growth and exploration. By adopting a student mindset, one can open themselves up to new opportunities and a deeper understanding of themselves and the world. This episode emphasizes the potential for growth and self-discovery that comes from being a yoga student, as well as the benefits of focusing on the internal world of the body. It explores the idea of slowing down the mind and being present in the moment, allowing for a deeper connection to the self. Ultimately, the podcast encourages listeners to embrace the role of a student and to continually seek knowledge and self-improvement.

Finding oneself in the unknown with Lauren Fensterstock

I'm so excited to introduce my first guest Lauren Fensterstock. She is a Maine based artist and Ashtangi, whose sculptures draw from her Buddhist and yoga practices to bring attention to embodied experience. Extravagant in their material presence and devotional labor, her work commands the eye to the present space and moment. Lauren's work in the art studio is braided together with her daily practice on the yoga mat and meditation cushion. She's practiced yoga for 15 years and found ashtanga during the early months of the COVID pandemic when she was looking for structure amidst the unknown. Lauren's art work has been featured in museums internationally. Some of these include The Chrysler Museum, The John Michael Kohler Art Center, Bowdoin College Museum of Art, and The Smithsonian American Art Museum. Outside the studio Lauren teaches at RISD and critiques art around the country. She has held appointments at the Rhode Island School of Design, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Maine College of Art. Enjoy the show!
